2143 NAUTICAL MILES

Nome to Nome, AK, aboard Silver Discoverer

Another day starts in the Russian Far East. Lars is lying among tundra flowers, James collects pebbles from the beach, Sergey is fishing salmons, Chris points the telescope at a bear, Rapa clambers up the highest rock, Richard follows us with his 600 mm lens, Brad collects the leg of an arctic hare, Daniil swallows wild blueberries, Conrad keeps time, the Zodiacs are still on the shore, and the beautiful Silver Discoverer observes us all at a distance. 14th August, fourteenth day of navigation aboard Silver Discoverer. This is not a cruise…

Hotel Locarno

Hotel Locarno

Rome, Italy

We believe that the real marvel of a place is defined by its soul. This is why Hotel Locarno, founded in 1925 by a Swiss couple, is our first choice for a getaway in the capital. It is a historical residence in a secluded central street that has been welcoming enlightened tourists, passing-by artists and habitués for decades. A hotel with a distinctive atmosphere, through whose rooms one can breathe the magic of art, the enchantment of beauty and the respect for history. Emotion greets you at the entrance, where a generous wisteria plant embraces the façade and courts the Art Nouveau glass windows, and accompanies you in the hall, in the bar, up the stairs and in the rooms. Authenticity is a constant, even where a conservative, appropriate, inspired restoration was carried out. In the warmest mornings, we suggest having breakfast in the romantic outside area of the hotel, between wrought-iron furniture and Roman skies, and using the bicycles at the guests’ disposal to tour the city. At sunset, do not miss a drink on the roof garden with its loving view on Rome’s house tops.

Forage

Forage

Los Angeles, USA

Let’s start from the end, with a well-deserved applause to this small modern diner. Contemporary organic cuisine finds a generous, delicate, inspiring dimension here. In a word, sexy. If they happen to be among the day’s specials, do not miss the Salmon Belly Tacos, with jalapenos and corn tortillas. In the hip and still genuine Silver Lake.

Ace Hotel Downtown LA

Ace Hotel Downtown LA

Los Angeles, USA

When we set up the Meraviglia Paper Awards, Ace Hotels will certainly be distinct in various categories, such as Best Hotel Chain, Best Atmosphere, Best Merchandising. And that is not it. Ace Downtown LA will stand out in the Best Waffle, Best Wall Decoration, Best Iced Cappuccino and Best Hall competitions. Set in the historical UA Theater in Downtown (built in 1927), this hotel gratifies all of our passions and confirms our esteem for one of the most advanced and inspiring brands in the world.

Pizzeria Mozza

Pizzeria Mozza

Los Angeles, USA

If a special, simple and surprising way to blend Italian and Californian culinary traditions exists, then it was discovered and excellently carried out by star chef Nancy Silverton. Our dinner at Pizzeria Mozza, the first of her restaurants, stirs up joy and satisfaction every time we think about it. Suggestions for use…

Waves

Waves

Los Angeles, USA

In Malibu, waves rule over everything. You realise it immediately. Their rhythm influences every movement, as powerful as a mantra. You lay your beach towel on the hot sand, fine and dense, then sit down and take the ocean in as it curls up and melts on the shore. Again and again, relentlessly, but with sudden mood changes. After a while, your breathing is not the same anymore. It matches the waves’ breathing. The same happens to the kids’ running among the splashes of water, to seagulls flying and to dolphins, whose fins keep coming into sight and disappearing again in the foreground on the horizon. It is an hypnotic movement that does not spare any gesture. Sometimes a song on a close radio brings you back home, but only for a few moments…

The Hart and the Hunter

The Hart and the Hunter

Los Angeles, USA

You enter here for the first time and feel at home. The Hart and the Hunter, at the foot of Palihotel in Melrose Avenue, reminds us how much we love America and how contented we feel among its vast borders. The two rooms in an old-fashioned design and atmosphere, the lovely details, the mitigated full colours, and the staff’s sweet smiles make it an inspiring oasis to find solace in during a scouting adventure in West Hollywood.

Son of a Gun

Son of a Gun

Los Angeles, USA

In the same country blue colour you have been dreaming about for your kitchen, covered with old-school knick-knacks, Son of a gun is one of those restaurants that win your heart. We suggest ordering the Lobster Roll: a chubby tower of freshly toasted brioche on which lies a quenelle of lobster and chips. Unforgettable. Along with that mini-parallelepiped of tastiness called Shrimp Toast Sandwich, thanks to which we discovered the voluptuous taste of Sriracha Mayo.

Malibu Farm

Malibu Farm

Los Angeles, USA

The Malibu Pier begins on the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and ends in the waves. There you can find fishers with almond-shaped eyes and cowboy hats, haughty seagulls, tribes of surfers and, at sunset, a pink sky that turns purple before the stars appear. There is also Malibu Farm, a divine mix of Sweden and California with its feet in the ocean, where you can enjoy a raw, organic, fresh local cuisine.
