Traveler’s Picks

by Gianluca Biscalchin

Jul 2014

His illustrations take us on an imaginary treasure hunt at the discovery of the hottest restaurants in town. After years writing for music and travel magazines Gianluca switched to gastronomy, first with his own food show on the radio, then contributing to other food magazines. Today, he writes a column about wine and food tourism on Touring Club magazine. As food illustrator he’s collaborated with Repubblica, RCS, Condé Nast, Giunti, Guido Tommasi Editore, Identità Golose, Gazzetta Gastronomica, among others. He has invented a personal language of words and drawings. These two worlds converge in his first book, Pret A Gormet, an ironic guide to fine dining, illustrated through words and drawings. It won’t be long until you start recognising his work and his distinctive style.

If you could close your eyes and be somewhere else, where would you want to be?

Lisbon, during cocktail hour.

The restaurant where you feel at home.

In the kitchen of “Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia”, in Milan.

A hotel room that makes you nostalgic.

The bathroom of Hotel San Pietro di Positano with breath-taking views over the Amalfi Coast.

A travel you could do over and over again without getting bored.

Toulouse, in France.

A dish that recently surprised you.

Niko Romito‘s spaghetti with tomato.

A holiday place from your childhood.

Sweden, with my cousins, half Italian half Swedish.

If a kid asked you to take him/her on a trip, where would that be?

New York: it’s got everything you need to learn about the world.

If you could choose a dream place to celebrate (birthday, wedding…) what would that be?

Ragusa, in Sicily.

A view you will never forget.

Mont Saint Michel at low tide.

Your Meraviglia address that can’t be missing from our collection.

Insomnia restaurant at Forno di Zoldo: you eat so much that you cannot sleep, hence the name…

A place you wish it was just round the corner.
